The city break; a short trip taken for pleasure and usually spent in the likes of London, Paris or Rome. Although not limited to these destinations, they are the more popular options for 2022.
When you book a city break, you want to be sure that you’re getting the most out of your money and your time away. This is why we have compiled a list of 5 tips to help you squeeze more out of your city break.
1. Bookmark places to visit on Google Maps
Although we listened to our work colleague say ‘you should visit this place, it’s amazing’, it doesn’t always sink in and we certainly don’t always remember it. This is why we recommend that you bookmark the places you want to see on Google Maps. This way, you won’t miss out on any of the fantastic places that the city you’re visiting has to offer.
Google Maps will be your best friend on a city break, providing you with details about places and most importantly directions around the new city. Get familiar with it beforehand and have a look around your accommodation; see what you can find there prior to your trip. You will be able to build up quite an extensive list of places to visit with Google Maps bookmarks and all of the details will just be a few clicks away.
Additionally, if you’re ever stuck on where to go or what to do, you can refer back to your Google Maps bookmarks to see a full list of options. You won’t have to spend hours wandering around searching for a decent place to eat anymore, Google will have it right there in your bookmarks.
It is a no-brainer, keep Google Maps in your back pocket on your city break.
2. Get up and out early
At the end of the day, your city break is your holiday and you can choose to spend it however you please. Whether that’s spending it having a much-deserved lie in, or exploring the city you have visited.
However, if you do want to explore the city, getting up and out the door early is the best way to do so. This way, you can get the most out of every day and see all that the city has to offer, in the way of attractions and sights.
Plus, you can beat the tourist traffic and experience the streets all on your own by getting up just a little bit earlier on your city break.
3. Use a tour service
Tour services in cities come in many forms, from private chauffeur tours to walking tours. A quality tour of a city will have a planned itinerary, allowing you to focus on enjoying the sights.
You can travel in style with a private chauffeur tour for a stylish, well-thought-out route, or you can join one of the many local tours available in cities. Many of which are done on foot, to access specific areas of cities.
Whilst you can certainly enjoy all of the sights in a city on your own, having the assistance of a tour service can give you access to places you didn’t consider visiting, and knowledge you wouldn’t learn anywhere else. Tour guides are always expertly trained to give you the most friendly and informative experience you can get.
4. Avoid the countdown
It is so easy on the last day of your city break to be going through a mental list of things to do, but it is important that you try to avoid this.
Rather than checking off things in your mind for example ‘Gosh I need to pack up my underwear’, enjoy the remaining time you have left away and make the most of it. Of course, you need some time to pack and get yourself ready to go home, but don’t let it dominate your day.
Use every minute and every hour to squeeze the most out of your city break.
5. Travel out of season
Of course, the peak time for city breaks as with any holiday in summer. In summer you are met with bustling streets full of tourists who are eager to see all of the sights.
By taking your city break out of season, you can experience the city more fully with streets that are less packed and heat that is more manageable. Of course, this is not something that everyone is able to do and requires a certain level of flexibility.
However, travellers always recommend that you take your city break in one of the off-peak months so that you can get the most out of your experience.
